Residency Program

The challenge of mastering the specialty that is Anesthesiology is enormous.  New drugs, new techniques, and new equipment are always being introduced.  Patients have more complex surgical and medical problems.  The advances in anesthesiology and perioperative care have allowed for aggressive use of invasive procedures and surgeries in even the sickest of patients.  The foundation of our specialty's growth and success is rooted in the anesthesiology residency training program.  This is where the fundamentals are learned, as well as habits developed.  I have complete confidence that there is no better place to train than at UNC.  The residency is the focal point of our department, and education leads our mission.

This is my 18th year on the faculty here and my second year as program director, and I am continually amazed by the quality of individuals that make up our department.  I could not imagine being anywhere but here.  Our cases are diverse, and we have a very busy clinical practice with surgeons that are collegial and respectful.  We function as a team.  All training in our ACGME-accredited program occurs at UNC, where you will find state of the art facilities and the most modern monitors and anesthetic delivery systems.  As a teaching institution, residents may be involved in the care of all patients at UNC, and because we have limited fellowships, there is little competition for the best cases.

Please look around our website, but more importantly, I hope I get a chance to meet you in person when you visit here.  We will have a new chairman starting mid-November, Dr. David Zvara.  I am absolutely convinced that his intention is to further enhance the academic profile of our department and the residency training program.

What Our Residents Say About the UNC Experience

"As residents, we do an amazing variety of cases in an environment that fosters learning and growth.  One day I find myself in a pediatric heart room and the next day I'm in the pain clinic placing an epidural under fluoroscopy.  Throughout everything, I can count on someone taking the time to teach, mentor, and perhaps most importantly, make me laugh so I want to come back the next day and start all over."

"At UNC, I am surrounded by faculty who love to teach and who give me the opportunity to try new things on a daily basis. I also am fortunate to work with residents who teach each other, look out for each other, and who know how to make residency enjoyable.  UNC is an amazing place to train, but more importantly, at UNC I have found colleagues that will be my lifetime friends."

"My intern year was challenging but I appreciated the opportunity to care for and learn about a wide variety of patients.  These experiences were invaluable as I transitioned to the operating room for my CA-1 year.  However, I feel like my education is just beginning.  At UNC, we receive great teaching both in and out of the OR.  I feel the faculty and other residents are really invested in making me an excellent anesthesiologist."
